Background: Emil Ferris was born in 1962, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. She is 58 years old now. Her parents are Mike Ferris and Eleanor Spiess-Ferris. She grew up in North Side’s Uptown. Her parents met at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, as artists. Initially, Emil worked as a toy designer and freelance illustrator before becoming an author. She was paralyzed when she was 40 years old, but gained motor functionality again eventually and got back to drawing, writing and attaining a MFA in creative writing. She completed her education including SAIC, BFA and MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Emil Ferris is well known for her writing and graphic novels.

In fact the book is almost like a journal of presenting the ten year old Karen Reyes, with obsession for monsters, drawing and also a woman’s fate dying in her apartment block. Details of detective work and vibrant beasts are filled by Karen in her diary. Emil Ferris makes the beasts and humans jump off the page. The novel also includes crosshatched artwork drawn with a ballpoint pen.
Her next book, Book 2 which should be another cracker is due in the coming months. Emil Ferris received praise for her graphic novel as one of the best comics by a new author and as a ‘masterpiece’.
