Author: Caio Fernando Abreu
Profile: Caio Fernando Abreu is one of the most original and influential Brazilian writers of the 1970s and the 1980s. His original name is Caio Fernando Loureiro de Abreu but is popularly known as Caio Fernando Abreu. He was born in 1948 in Santiago do Boqueirao in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. He died in 1996 in Porto Alegre.
He pursued his education at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. However he gained interest in writing for various pop culture magazines like Revista Pop, Revista Nova, Revista Veja and Revista Manchete and hence gave up academics.
Besides being a literary writer and prolific journalist, he also wrote cronicas or chronicles, short stories, drama and novels. All through his life he ensured extensive correspondence with other artists and writers and friends and family. He is one of the most recognized Brazilian artists who lost his life to AIDS.
Writing style: Caio Fernando Abreu’s literature is a testimony of politics, society and culture during the 1970s and 1980s in Brazil. He led an active cultural life as a journalist by writing chronicles and reviews for a number of well known Brazilian magazines.
New identities were introduced by him into the realm of literature of Brazil, as a fictional writer. Examples of identities he used include bisexual men, gay teenagers, drag queens and other individuals whose gender and sexualities reside in the periphery of society. As far as his cultural identity is concerned, his writings are anything but a pure, essential entity and fixed from foreign contamination.
As his work is full of examples of multiple appropriations of a heterosexual society in the mainstream into the queer narratives and queer sensibility, Abreu has also been a camp writer. His confessional literature style expresses not only his personal desires, fears, sentiments and hopes but also his collective and individual voice at the same time.
