Ganesh Damodar Savarkar born on June 13, 1879, was born in Bhagur. He was also known as Baburao Savarkar in the Independence movement in India. Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and Narayan Damodar Savarkar both revolutionaries too, were his brothers. Ganesh, a patriot of the first order, was an Indian nationalist and freedom fighter. The Abhinav Bharat Society was founded by him. In India, against the British colonial government, he courageously led an armed movement. As a result of this he was sentenced to transportation for life.
Of all the three brothers, Ganesh was the eldest. He also had a sister named Mainabai, Baburao was well known as an organizer of Hindus, a writer and philosopher. Jackson the collector of Nashik was responsible for deporting Ganesh Damodar Savarkar for life. Ganesh was one of the five friends including Dr.Hedgewar, Dr.Tholkar, Dr.L.V.Paranjpe and Dr.B.S.Moonje who started the RSS – Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. As per the RSS ideology the first systematic statement was ‘We and our Nationhood, Defined’. Ganesh Damodar Savarkar died on March 16, 1945. He is the unsung and unknown epitome of heroism in the Indian freedom struggle.
