Profile: Samit Basu is an Indian novelist and filmmaker. He was born in Kolkata, India. Presently he lives in Delhi and Mumbai. Children’s books, superhero novels, fantasy novels, short stories, graphic novels and a film named House arrest are his body of works. Chosen Spirits, an anti-dystopian novel is his next work released on April 2020, in the form of an ebook.
Samit Basu completed his education at Don Bosco School, Presidency University and the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. He has also completed a course at the University of Westminster, London, in broadcasting and documentary filmmaking.
Samit Basu is the pioneer in Indian sci-fi writing. When he was just 23 years old, he published, The Simoqin Prophecies, his first sci-fi novel. In 2012, he published his novel, Turbulence, which introduced him to the West. This novel was announced as contender for best superhero novel of all times, by Superheronovels.com. He has been strongly influenced by China Mieville, Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Alan Moore and J.R.R. Tolkein.
Samit Basu is a Comics writer as well. As part of his initial project he worked as writer for The Tall Tales of Vishnu Sharma based on the Panchatantra and for Shekhar Kapur’s Devi (#3#10).Besides this he has also co-written a graphic novel, Untouchable (comics) with Lucifer writer Mike Carey and X-Men. He has also written an episode zombie comedy, UnHoli set in and around New Delhi. He published a fantasy/comic take called Local Monsters in 2013 about 6 immigrant monsters residing in a house in Delhi. He has also made a contribution to eighteen days, a Grant Morrison take on the Mahabharata.
