5 Tourism Sites created by Weathering and Erosion

5 Tourism Sites created by Weathering and Erosion:

Erosion is caused by Mechanical Weathering and Chemical Weathering. In Mechanical Weathering it can be seen that rocks or sand move off as a chunk and this change is quite visible. Chemical Weathering is more subtle as it happens through chemical reactions. It takes a long time to see the visible changes. All the agents of erosion cause either one of these weathering. Chemical Weathering is mostly caused by water. There are many places around the world that are results of erosion and have become popular tourist spots.

Travel for many is something that has to be enjoyed and there are millions who travel on a particular day. Travel can be for work, business, vacation, sightseeing anything. Eco tourism is travel to places where the nature is delicately balanced and you have to strictly follow the rules set up in these places.

There are many places which have been created by man for people to visit like the Disney land or Taj Mahal. There are other places which have become famous for its natural beauty while in some places unique feature have been formed on rocks, river bed and resulted in topographical changes. Such places have also become tourists’ spots. These changes in the topography have been brought about by the agents of erosion, wind, water, waves and ice. If you are visiting these places you have to ensure that nothing in this place is changed and that it is preserved as it is. This is the main idea of eco tourism.

Chocolate Hills of Puerto Rico

These hills are found in Puerto Rico and few other places and are made of marine limestone and sand. They contain fossils of marine life. There are at least two versions of how these Chocolate Hills were formed. It is said that they were lifted up from the sea level due to change brought in by the tectonic movement. Then the erosion brought about by rainfall, river and streams brought it to the shape it is presently seen in. These hills are separated by plains and one can find many springs and caves in these hills. Another version stated is that these hills were coral reefs below the sea that erupted up due to geological shift and over years got eroded due to rain and water to get the shape it is in now. These strange hills are a great tourist attraction as it is something very different and strange.

Wave Rock of Perth

Wave Rock in Perth looks like a huge wave that never splashed to the banks. This is a part of the nature reserve, Hyden Wildlife Park. Thousands of tourists visit this park every year and the Wave Rock is definitely the most sought after attraction of this park. This wave wall is actually a slope that has concaved upward and is made of granite boulders. It is believed that this concave shaped slope was formed due to chemical weathering of the ground water around the base. It is truly a natural spectacular and attracts a lot of visitors. The aborigines of the area revere this rock and it has great cultural relevance in their lives.

Baffin Island Waterfall of Canada

This waterfall is the effect of glacial erosion. The glacier eroded created a waterfall down the cliffs of Baffin Island and this joins the clear water of Admiralty Inlet. This picturesque tourist spot is found in Baffin Island, Nunavut in Canada. This running water is altering the landscape of the Baffin Island. It is believed that Canada was covered by sheets of ice many millions of years ago. While it melted in many parts of Canada, ice remained in this Island till about 1500 years ago. Even now some areas are still covered by ice all through the year. Baffin Island is the largest island in Canada and is the fifth largest island in the world.

Sand Tufa of Arizona

Arizona has a plethora of sites that stand as testimonials of weathering. Each one is unique and attractive. The Sand Tufa is found in the Arizona lake bed which has dried up. It is set up with the snow capped mountains of Sierra Nevada, as a backdrop. It is a spot that is visited by many and the attraction is the cauliflower like formations. It is believed that fresh water springs penetrated from the Arizona Lake and formed calcium carbonate deposits. This happened before the lake went dry. When the level dropped down and the lake became dry, wind weathered it and took away the sand below these calcium carbonate deposits to give it the flower like appearance.

Grand Canyon of Arizona

This is a hugely popular tourist spot and the best example for land forms created due to weathering. The forms created by erosion are truly amazing. It is mostly wind and water that has eroded the sand, rock and soil to create these unique formations. The anvil shaped rock is the result of wind which has carved sandstone into an anvil. Sand stone gets eroded faster than the more dense rocks. Grand Canyon is a delight for someone who is on the lookout for adventure. There are many who flock to this wonder of the world, yet the pristine beauty of the Grand Canyon is maintained.

Matter like energy is not destroyed; it only changes its form. The main factor that changes the form of matter in nature is weathering. Constant weathering brings about erosion and this changes the matter. Thus what were rocks millions of years before are now small particles of sand or small stones. The agents of weathering like wind, water, waves and ice have done harm and good to the nature. This is nature’s way of changing the topography. Some of the changes brought about by erosion have created marvels in nature and these have been converted into tourists spots. They are listed under the places for eco tourism. When the tag eco tourism is given, tourists make sure that the pristine beauty of the place is not destroyed.
