Mark Zuckerberg Joins the Ranks of Billionaires Aiming for Artificial General Intelligence

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, has announced a reorganization of the company’s AI teams to bolster efforts in creating Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). This move reflects Meta’s commitment to accelerating its AI research and enhancing the development of the metaverse. Currently, Meta operates two AI research teams: the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team, established in 2013, and a team dedicated to generative AI experiences for app users. Zuckerberg intends to bring these two teams closer together, fostering collaboration and expansion within both groups.

While Zuckerberg did not specify the number of new hires for the AI efforts, this expansion is significant, given Meta’s reduction of over 20,000 jobs since 2022. In a Threads video, Zuckerberg emphasized that these changes align with Meta’s long-term goals of building general intelligence, responsibly open-sourcing it, and making it accessible for everyone in their daily lives. This strategic shift reinforces Meta’s position in the competitive landscape of AI companies and projects focused on generative AI.

The pursuit of AGI, often likened to human-level intelligence, has captivated several companies, including Elon Musk’s, OpenAI, and Google. Zuckerberg is now directing Meta’s substantial resources toward this ambitious objective, highlighting the company’s commitment to creating a vast infrastructure for AI development. He shared, “We’re building a massive amount of infrastructure. At the end of this year, we’ll have ~350k Nvidia H100s — and overall ~600k H100s H100 equivalents of compute if you include other GPUs.”

Despite the intensified focus on AGI, Zuckerberg reiterated Meta’s dedication to the metaverse, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the company’s AI work and the metaverse vision. This approach aligns with Zuckerberg’s strategy of linking AI advancements with the metaverse, as he believes the two components are mutually beneficial. While the metaverse concept has faced challenges in gaining widespread understanding and popularity, Zuckerberg is optimistic about its future, particularly as Meta improves smart glasses and embedded AI. He anticipates increased interactions with AIs throughout the day using smart glasses like those being developed with Ray-Ban Meta by the end of the decade.
